The collection includes the recollections of John Mason (1766- 1849), letters of George Mason (1725-1792) to his sons George and John about business affairs and the building of Washington, D.C. Also, includes letters between the immediate members of the George Mason and General John Mason families and friends, 1781-1857; letters between General John Mason and his partners, John and Joseph Fenwick, 1789-1803; financial and banking correspondence, 1781-1823, official and other papers, 1725-1823, and letters to General John Mason, 1789-1823. Correspondents include Joel Barlow (1754-1812) concerning housing in Washington, D.C. and John Francis Mercer (1759-1821) regarding the establishment of a National Agricultural and Manufacturing Society. Also, contains papers for General John Mason's shipping and mercantile business, 1790-1834, including workmen's receipts and ships' papers, 1793-1824, for the Pigeon, the St. Ubes, the Prosperity, the Maryland, and the Molly.
